Creating a lasting legacy in Toby’s memory

The Pear Tree Fund

People aged between 14 and 35 are being invited to book an appointment at a special cardiac screening event taking place in memory of much-loved young footballer Toby Chenery.

The 23-year-old’s family have joined forces with the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) to offer simple 10-minute echocardiogram (ECG) tests at the Pear Tree Centre on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 February.

The screening has been paid for with a portion of a staggering £49,433 raised in Toby’s memory after he passed away suddenly in his sleep last February. Sadly, Toby suffered with an undiagnosed heart condition and had been asymptomatic his whole life.

The Halesworth Town footballer’s family are now creating a meaningful legacy in his memory by holding a series of screening events to detect similar conditions in other young people.

They said: “Toby was a kind, caring young man who would do anything to help anyone and we know he would approve of what we are trying to achieve in his memory. If we can save just one person and their family from having to go through the pain and heartbreak we have suffered, then we will have created the legacy that Toby deserves.

“Our ultimate goal would be for a national screening programme to be prioritised by the government, but until this happens we will continue to raise money in Toby’s name and screen as many young people as we can.”

At least 12 young people pass away in the UK every week in the same or similar ways to Toby, with no symptoms or warning, which is why screening is so important.
