The Pear Tree Fund's history
Our charity was set up in 1989 after two community nurses heard about a young man who was in danger of being admitted into hospital to die, against his and his family’s wishes, as he was unable to get the funding he needed to remain at home.
The nurses – Jane Edwards and Nikki Sawkins – pledged to do whatever they could to stop this from happening again and started raising funds to allow people to die at home if they wished to.
Since then, the charity has provided care for hundreds of people registered with Cutlers Hill Surgery, giving them choice and helping reduce anxiety for their families at what can be a very difficult time.
