Navigating menopause with the Pear Tree Fund: You’re not alone

The Pear Tree Fund

At the Pear Tree Fund, we understand that “the change” is more than just a phrase – it’s a significant journey in a woman’s life that can bring unexpected challenges. While school lessons might have touched on menopause, they rarely prepared us for the feelings of isolation, loneliness, or even fear that can accompany this time. But support is available – we’re here and you don’t have to go through it alone.

Understanding menopause and perimenopause

In recent months, many celebrities have openly shared their experiences with perimenopause, some even in their mid-thirties. This has shed a much-needed light on a life stage that many women in this age bracket might be hearing about for the first time. So, what exactly is menopause? According to the NHS, “Menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier.” If you’ve found yourself Googling late at night, asking “Is 45 too early for menopause?”, rest assured, you’re not alone in those thoughts. The truth is that many women experience perimenopause symptoms (the lead-up to menopause) for some time before their periods stop.

The symptoms associated with perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause can be incredibly personal. From the well-known hot flushes to brain fog and loss of libido, our changing hormones have a lot to answer for. NHS England reports that there are around 34 physical and mental symptoms associated with the perimenopause and menopause. It’s completely understandable if you’ve struggled to have “that conversation” with friends, colleagues, or even loved ones – where do you even start with a list that long?

Will I ever feel good again?

It’s a common question, and the good news is, yes! While the impact of hormonal changes can be profound and lead to symptoms that sometimes mimic other conditions, which can be quite scary, these symptoms can be managed and this period in your life is not forever.
