In 2021, the Woods family suffered an unimaginable tragedy, losing two young women just six weeks apart. The first loss was Emma Woods, who had bravely battled Turner Syndrome, a genetic condition, for many years. Just weeks later, the family lost Abbie who had a brain tumour called a glioblastoma.

A beacon of hope
Emma’s stepmother, Kelly, became aware of The Pear Tree Centre in 2021 and met with centre manager Seva after being referred by the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Having endured such a painful and traumatic time, the family began using our counselling services and attending our support sessions. They continue to access this vital support whenever they need it.
Recalling one of the most impactful ways the Pear Tree Fund helped, Kelly spoke of an unforgettable trip which she said “saved our family”. Seva approached a charity that provides respite holidays for families dealing with childhood cancer to ask if the Woods family and their relatives could also stay at a farm in Bramfield for a week. Thanks to the generosity of the Broad Oak Farmhouse – Bramfield Charitable Trust, this special trip was made possible.

A heartfelt thank you
Fast forward to summer 2025, and Kelly contacted Seva, to share some wonderful news: the family would be raising funds for us at their annual charity football match.
The match is held in Emma’s memory each year and helps to raise awareness of Turner Syndrome, which affects one in 2,000 women and is an abnormality of the X chromosome.
Seva was deeply moved, and said: “I was so touched. Even after everything they’ve been through, the Woods are still thinking of helping others. This family will always hold a special place in the Pear Tree Fund’s heart.”

Advice for people who are grieving
We also asked our Seva what advice she would offer someone experiencing a loss of a loved one. She shared these words of advice:
• sit quietly and think about your loved ones
• look at special photos of them
• play music that reminds you of them
• allow yourself to cry
• make time to visit us
